D2L Connect: The Open-Source Bridge to Your Coursework

Most university learning management systems act as a walled garden, trapping your course materials behind endless clicks and forcing you to manually track deadlines across a dozen different syllabi. D2L Connect (built as d2l-brightspace) completely changes that dynamic. It's an open-source CLI tool that transforms a standard Brightspace account into a powerful, locally synced knowledge base that integrates directly with your favorite AI and automation workflows.

Your Coursework, Unlocked Running quietly in the background, D2L Connect keeps a local SQLite database perfectly aligned with your current term's courses. It bypasses the friction of the web app by pulling exactly what you need:

Comprehensive Syncing: Automatically fetches announcements, grades by category, assignments, quizzes, the calendar, and the complete course content tree.

Deep Text Extraction and OCR: It doesn't just download files; it reads them. By extracting text from lecture slides, Word docs, and even scanned PDFs, every worksheet and solution becomes instantly searchable via the CLI.

Proactive Notifications: You dictate how you want to be alerted. Configure desktop notifications, Discord messages, or pipe a generic JSON webhook into an n8n workflow to send WhatsApp alerts when a deadline approaches within 48 hours.

Semestra Integration: Automatically push your course structure, rubric scores, and grades into Semestra for effortless, credit-weighted GPA tracking.

Native AI Integration The real power of D2L Connect is its built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and REST API. Instead of manually downloading a PDF and uploading it to an AI, your AI gets direct, local access to your coursework.

Whether you are using Claude Code, a local Ollama setup, or custom Python scripts, you can query your materials instantly. You can ask your AI to "Search my course files for the chain rule and summarize the instructor's latest announcement," and it will pull the locally extracted text to give you a grounded, accurate answer without ever pinging the university's servers.

Secure and Read-Only by Design Security and compliance are built into the architecture. The tool is strictly read-only. It uses a headless browser via Playwright to inherit your normal SSO and MFA session—meaning it only reads what you already have permission to see and never touches or stores your actual password.

Because it was built and tested against rigorous environments like UDST, it paces its API calls gently. All your data stays securely on your local machine, and exposing it to cloud AIs via secure tunnels is completely opt-in.

Get Started If you are comfortable in a Linux terminal and want to take absolute control over your academic data, you can spin this up in minutes.
